Step 1: Locate the image you wish to upload

If you are using a photo from a social media platform or from someone’s phone, download it to your computer and ensure you can locate its file location. This is usually in the My Documents or Downloads folder. This may vary depending on your devices.

Step 2: Sign in to Canva

The next step is to make sure you have a Canva account. If you don’t have one yet, head over to Canva.com and sign up for free. Once you’ve signed in, you’ll be greeted by Canva’s user-friendly interface.

Step 3: Open your editable template or create a new design

If you are uploading your image to your own design, open it now or create a new design.

Step 4: Access the Uploads Tab

Once you’ve opened your design, you’ll be taken to the Canva editor. On the left-hand side of the screen, you’ll see a panel with different tabs. Click on the Uploads tab to access your personal image library. (See figure 1 in the diagram below).

Step 5: Upload Your Image

To upload your own image into Canva, simply click on the purple Upload button (figure 1). This will open a file explorer window where you can navigate to the location of your desired image on your computer. You should have hopefully located its whereabouts in Step 1.

Select the image file and click Open to begin the upload process. (Figure 2).

After uploading your image, it will appear in the Uploads tab under Your uploads. (Figure 3)

Step 6: Customize Your Design

.To add your image to the design, simply drag and drop it onto the canvas. Canva allows you to resize, rotate, and position your image to fit your design perfectly (figure 4). See the video at the top of this post for a visual guide.

Step 7: Add / Edit Text or Graphics

To complement your uploaded image, you can edit the sample text but changing the font style, size, colour and position. You can also add additional text or graphics using Canva’s extensive library of elements.

Click on the respective tabs on the left-hand panel to browse through text options or graphic elements such as shapes, icons, and illustrations. Step 8: Save and Download Your Design

Once you’re satisfied with your design, it’s time to save and download it. Click on the Share button on the top right corner of the screen and then select Download.

Canva offers various file formats such as PNG, JPG, PDF, and more. For a printable document, the best option is usually PDF Print, but if you purchased an editable template check if there are any specific instructions about the file format in the instructions.
